UPC & Barcodes
Every release needs a UPC. Here's what it is, when DIMBER assigns one, and when to use your existing code.
Know which UPC belongs to your release
A UPC (Universal Product Code) or EAN (European Article Number) is the unique identifier for your release. Digital stores use it to recognize and track your album, EP, or single across their systems. One release gets one UPC, and that code stays with the release permanently.
How UPCs work
Every release needs exactly one UPC. That code identifies your release as a distinct product across every DSP and retailer. The UPC does not change over time, even if you move the release to a new distributor or keep it live for years. Treat the UPC like the serial number for your product.
No UPC? No problem
If you do not already have a UPC, DIMBER assigns one automatically during upload. You do not need to buy one separately or complete any extra setup. Upload the release, and DIMBER handles the identifier for you.
Already distributed? Use your existing UPC
If your release was previously distributed digitally or physically on CD, vinyl, or cassette, it likely already has a UPC. Always use that original code.
This preserves your catalog history and helps platforms keep your release connected to its existing data. Assigning a new UPC to an existing release creates a duplicate product and can split streaming history across separate listings.
